Fake TMPD officer arrested for allegedly scamming motorists in Pretoria
The Tshwane Metro Police Department has arrested a man accused of impersonating a metro police official and defrauding motorists outside the TMPD transgression offices in Pretoria Central.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has arrested a man for allegedly posing as a metro police officer and scamming members of the public outside the TMPD transgression offices at 11 Francis Baard Street in Pretoria Central.
He was arrested by the TMPD Crime Complaints Unit on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, after a member of the public reported allegedly losing R4,800 to the suspect.
In a statement TMPD said the suspect falsely claimed to be an employee of the metro police department and approached motorists seeking assistance with traffic fines and municipal transgressions.
He allegedly offered victims significant discounts on outstanding infringement notices if they paid him directly instead of using official City of Tshwane payment channels.
Police believe the suspect specifically targeted members of the public visiting the transgression offices and convinced them to hand over cash under false pretences.
TMPD has urged residents to remain cautious and warned that all legitimate payments must only be made through authorised municipal offices and official payment systems.
Members of the public have also been encouraged to report suspicious individuals claiming to be TMPD officials or requesting payments by contacting TMPD regional offices or calling 012 358 7095/7096.
