Heritage Times has announced that South African philanthropist Dr Collen Mashawana will receive the African Philanthropist Award at the 2026 African Heritage Awards in Accra. The honour recognises his transformative work in uplifting vulnerable communities and advancing development across the continent.
South African humanitarian and business leader Dr Collen Mashawana has been awarded one of the continent’s highest honours for philanthropy. Heritage Times has confirmed that he will receive the African Philanthropist Award at the 2026 African Heritage Awards, a ceremony that celebrates African excellence and leadership in service of the continent’s development.
The award will be presented on 11 April 2026 at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra. The ceremony is being hosted by the Government of Ghana and is expected to draw heads of state, global thought leaders, captains of industry and leading figures from across Africa and the Diaspora.
Heritage Times said the decision to honour Dr Collen was unanimous, praising his long standing commitment to community upliftment and his investment in programmes that support vulnerable families, improve access to essential services and empower young people across Africa.
In a statement, the organisation said Dr Collen’s work has had a lasting impact on communities and continues to inspire a new generation of Africans who see philanthropy as a tool for real social change. Heritage Times commended him for demonstrating practical leadership and compassion that reaches beyond borders.
The African Heritage Awards is a Pan African platform created to celebrate individuals who have significantly shaped the African narrative through innovation, leadership, activism, humanitarian efforts and economic advancement. The awards have previously honoured prominent figures such as Ghanaian President Dr John Dramani Mahama, Nigeria’s former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan, former Botswana President Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, the late Tanzanian President John Magufuli and World Trade Organization Director General Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.
Past recipients also include Professor Patrick Lumumba, Liberia’s former Vice President Chief Dr Jewel Howard Taylor and several leading African brands and institutions.
Organisers say the 2026 edition aims to be one of the most memorable to date, with a strong focus on celebrating African trailblazers who continue to transform lives and reposition Africa on the global stage.
Heritage Times expressed gratitude to Dr Collen for his service to humanity and said his contributions represent the kind of leadership the continent needs to achieve long term development.
Further information regarding the ceremony can be obtained from the event secretariat, with preparations already underway to welcome delegates from around the world.
Dr Collen’s recognition adds to a growing list of Africans who are using resources, influence and commitment to advance the collective good of the continent. His award marks a significant milestone in his journey of service and reinforces the role of philanthropy in shaping a more inclusive and resilient Africa.
