DA welcomes arrest of former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi
Former Ekurhuleni City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi is expected to appear in court following her arrest as the Democratic Alliance calls for continued action against corruption in Ekurhuleni.
Former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi is expected to appear at Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after being arrested during an operation conducted by the Commission Recommendations Task Team. Police have confirmed that four people were arrested as part of ongoing investigations linked to the matter.
In response to the arrests, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said it welcomed the developments, describing them as a significant step towards holding those accused of corruption and maladministration accountable.
In a statement, DA Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane said the arrests followed months of efforts by several stakeholders, including the Madlanga Commission, whistleblowers, members of the media and the DA.
Rasilingwane said the party had supplemented its criminal complaint against Mashazi with additional whistleblower information just a day before the arrests.
He called on law enforcement authorities to continue investigating all cases where credible evidence exists, saying accountability should be pursued without fear or favour.
The DA also welcomed the arrest of suspended City of Ekurhuleni Head of Legal Kemi Behari, who was among those taken into custody.
According to the party, those implicated in corruption, maladministration and the obstruction of accountability should face the full consequences of the law through the courts.
The DA said the arrests should not mark the end of investigations into alleged wrongdoing within the City of Ekurhuleni, arguing that residents deserve a municipality that prioritises service delivery, transparency and accountability.
