DA removes Mark Burke from finance roles as ANC calls for criminal investigation
The DA has removed Dr Mark Burke from Parliament’s finance committee and the party’s parliamentary finance cluster amid allegations linked to fintech company Kastelo. ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli says he will open a criminal case against Burke, while Kingsley Wakelin takes over as the DA’s finance spokesperson.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has removed Dr Mark Burke from Parliament’s finance-related committees and the party’s parliamentary finance cluster amid allegations linked to Kastelo, the fintech company he founded and previously led.
Burke has also been removed as the DA’s finance spokesperson, with Kingsley Wakelin taking over the role.
The move follows scrutiny from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and court proceedings involving Kastelo and transactions reportedly worth about R4 billion. The ANC says Burke’s removal from parliamentary committees does not absolve him from accountability.
The ANC has further criticised the DA, arguing that removing Burke from the committees only addresses potential conflicts of interest and does not replace ongoing investigations or legal processes.
ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli has indicated that he will open a criminal case against Burke, calling for the relevant authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure that anyone found to have broken the law faces the consequences.
The ANC said political office should not shield anyone from scrutiny and that accountability must prevail regardless of political affiliation.
