The Judicial Commission into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System will hold partially closed hearings from 20–22 October. Three detectives will testify remotely about interference in cartel investigations, with audio and transcripts made public.
The Madlanga commission of Enquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System will this Monday hold partially in-camera hearings until Wednesday.
During this session, Witnesses only identified as A, B and C, all detectives who investigated crimes linked to criminal cartels will testify off camera from a remote location, though their voices will remain audible.
The witnesses are expected to share their experiences of investigating organised criminal networks and describe alleged attempts to interfere with their work.
The commission said members of the public and media will be able to access the auditorium at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College, where the hearings will be held.
The proceedings will be livestreamed, and the witnesses’ exhibits will be displayed on-screen as they testify.
Further, a transcript of the testimony will be made publicly available once all three witnesses have concluded their evidence.
Last week, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled on the arrangement following an application brought by evidence leaders to have some of the witnesses testify in camera.
Two media houses, Daily Maverick and News24 had brought an application to dispute the in camera arrangement. Madlanga made the ruling after the two parties reached a consensus on how the evidence should continue to be heard.
