Botswana President Duma Boko has announced a three-day national mourning period after the death of former president Festus Mogae, who passed away at the age of 86.

Boko expressed deep sorrow over Mogae’s passing and praised his legacy of leadership and service to the nation.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of our former President Festus Gontebanye Mogae. His legacy of service and leadership will forever be remembered,” Boko said.
He extended condolences to Mogae’s family, loved ones and the people of Botswana, adding: “May his soul rest in peace.”
Boko also announced that national flags would fly at half-mast during the mourning period in honour of the former head of state.
“In recognition of his immense contribution to the Republic of Botswana, I declare three days of mourning, during which national flags will fly at half-mast in honour of His Excellency, Mr Festus Mogae,” he said.
Mogae served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008 after succeeding Ketumile Masire.
An economist by profession, Mogae earned international recognition for promoting good governance and for Botswana’s strong response to the HIV/AIDS crisis during his presidency. He was widely respected for his leadership of the diamond-rich southern African nation and his contribution to economic stability and development.
Boko described serving as president as one of the highest honours, while paying tribute to Mogae’s dedication to the country and its people.
