Police have confirmed a major breakthrough in the investigation into the deadly Saulsville mass shooting after ballistics tests positively linked a seized firearm to the crime scene. Twelve people were killed and 13 others injured in the shooting.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the firearm was recovered last week during a joint operation by Gauteng and Limpopo police, which led to the arrest of one of three persons of interest in Polokwane.
According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspect was found in possession of a firearm and several rounds of ammunition at the time of his arrest. Subsequent ballistics analysis has now confirmed that the weapon was used in the Saulsville attack.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola praised the multidisciplinary team investigating the case, describing the development as a significant breakthrough.
Mathe said the suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He will then appear again on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court, where he faces 12 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.
She said the suspect cannot be named at this stage, pending the completion of an identity parade. Meanwhile, a manhunt is continuing for two other suspects who remain at large.
