Bail hearing for alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi postponed
North West businessman Brown Mogotsi will remain in custody after his bail application was postponed to Thursday for address verification in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
North West alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi briefly appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where his bail application was postponed to Thursday pending address verification.
Mogotsi is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating the ends of justice, and perjury.
The perjury charge relates to allegations that he staged an attempt on his life in November last year.
However, Mogotsi has denied all the charges against him.
In a sworn affidavit read out by his legal representative in court, Mogotsi claimed that he was followed by a bakkie while driving in Vosloorus on 3 November.
According to the affidavit, the vehicle allegedly made a U-turn before shots were fired at him.
Mogotsi told the court that he feared for his life, exited his vehicle and fled the scene before later returning, where he found community members and police officers.
He added that he subsequently opened a case of attempted murder.
“I therefore deny the allegations that I staged an assassination attempt. Such an allegation is unfounded, speculative and inconsistent with the facts of what transpired,” the affidavit stated.
The State is opposing bail.
