ANC slams no-confidence motion against Joburg mayor Dada Morero

ANC slams no-confidence motion against Joburg mayor Dada Morero

As the controversy surrounding Morero's administration resurfaced this week, with reports indicating that a coalition of minority parties within the Johannesburg City Council has rallied to submit the motion.

This new motion is reported to be led by the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Al-Jamah-A, the United Democratic Movement (UDM), and the African Heart Congress Party (AHCP).

The ANC in the Greater Johannesburg region has dismissed with contempt the alleged motion of no confidence against its mayor, Dada Morero.

Initial reports suggested that the motion was formally lodged with the council Speaker, Margaret Arnolds, alleging interference in administrative processes and the failure to implement vital resolutions from the political management committee (PMC).

However, ANC regional spokesperson Masilo Serekele dismissed these claims, asserting that the mayor’s leadership has not faltered in delivering services to Johannesburg residents.

Reacting to the alleged motion, ANC regional spokesperson Masilo Serekele dismissed reports suggesting that the mayor’s administration has failed to deliver to the people of Johannesburg, adding that this motion is nothing but a desperate attempt at sowing instability within the city council.

“The ANC wishes to place on record that none of the parties behind this purported motion have ever formally engaged the ANC or raised any concerns through proper coalition structures regarding the leadership or performance of the mayor. Their sudden public posture is therefore disingenuous and driven by narrow political motives, rather than the genuine interests of the residents of Johannesburg,” said Serekele.

A source close to the office of the speaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that this alleged motion was only brought on by four parties within the minority coalition.

This source said that without the involvement of other parties within this bloc, the intended motion will not succeed.

“It is going to be a failed motion, regardless. These are just four minority parties, who do not have the numbers to see this motion through. It will be difficult for this motion to succeed because these parties only account for four seats.  Also, most parties within this bloc support and are in fear of the executive mayor,” the source said.

The latest push against the mayor comes just four months after Morero survived an earlier motion of no-confidence alongside Johannesburg chief whip Sithembiso Zungu.

At the time, the DA, who had initially tabled the motion in June, accused Morero and Zungu of failure to tackle service delivery challenges in the city.
