In a tragic incident at Seshego Hospital in Limpopo, a three-year-old girl was found dead inside a locked vehicle on the hospital premises after reportedly being left there earlier by her mother. Police are treating the matter as a culpable homicide investigation, with a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
In what can only be described as a heartbreaking sequence of events, a three-year-old girl lost her life after being left inside a locked vehicle on the grounds of Seshego Hospital in Limpopo. Police were summoned to the scene shortly after 15:10 on Monday afternoon and were directed by medical staff to a blue Toyota Corolla Cross parked within the hospital’s compound.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the child was discovered in the back seat of the vehicle, the windows closed, and with no signs of movement. Preliminary reports indicate the little girl died from the effects of heat and lack of oxygen inside the car.
Investigations suggest that the child’s mother had arrived at the hospital earlier that morning, around 07:00, and left her daughter in the vehicle while she attended a handover session at the facility. It is believed she inadvertently forgot her daughter inside.
On the day, the temperature in the area reportedly reached 30 °C, creating dangerous conditions for a small child left inside a closed vehicle. A full post-mortem examination will be conducted to verify the exact cause of death, and the case is being handled as culpable homicide while the investigation continues.
The provincial health department has been asked for comment, and is expected to respond in due course.
