The ANC has announced the passing of its Chaplain, Moruti Maphatsoe, describing him as a devoted spiritual leader and freedom fighter who served the movement with faith and discipline. The party extended condolences to his family and praised his lifelong commitment to justice, unity and the liberation struggle.
In a statement released on Friday, ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said Maphatsoe was both a spiritual leader and a disciplined soldier who embodied the values of the liberation movement. She said his life reflected compassion and an unwavering commitment to the struggle for justice and freedom.
“Comrade Moruti was not only a spiritual pillar of strength within our ranks but also a committed cadre of uMkhonto weSizwe, the people’s army that fought fearlessly for the freedom and dignity of our people,” Bhengu said.
Maphatsoe was among the generation of soldiers who joined the armed struggle under uMkhonto weSizwe, the military wing of the ANC, during the fight against apartheid. After the democratic transition, he continued to serve within the organisation, offering spiritual guidance and comfort to families, comrades and communities.
The ANC said his work extended beyond political structures. Maphatsoe often officiated at memorial services and funerals of former freedom fighters, ensuring that their sacrifices were recognised and respected. His pastoral work was described as an important link between the spiritual and revolutionary traditions of the movement.
“Having dedicated his life to the cause of justice and freedom, Comrade Moruti continued to serve the movement long after the guns were silenced,” the ANC said. “He found his purpose in comforting families in their darkest hours, guiding comrades and communities with faith, humility and grace.”
The party said his passing leaves a significant void within its structures and the broader uMkhonto weSizwe and faith community.
The ANC extended condolences to his family, friends and all those who worked with him over the years. “May his family find strength and comfort in knowing that his legacy of faith, courage and revolutionary service will continue to inspire generations to come,” Bhengu said.
The ANC said funeral arrangements for Moruti Maphatsoe will be announced once details have been finalised by his family in consultation with the party.
