As these leagues consolidate their support for President Ramaphosa, analysts suggest that this united front could be critical in countering factional disputes within the ANC. The coming days will be pivotal as the party navigates through this turbulent phase, with the NEC meeting poised to address the mounting pressures and shifting dynamics.
In a show of unwavering support, the ANC Women’s League, the Veterans League, and the Youth League have collectively affirmed their backing for President Cyril Ramaphosa as speculation regarding his potential resignation resurfaces.
This announcement comes ahead of an anticipated meeting of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday, adding a layer of urgency to the internal discourse within the party.
Over the weekend, each league issued separate statements condemning any alleged plots aimed at ousting Ramaphosa from his presidential role. The ANC Women’s League expressed outrage at what it termed a conspiracy among certain members of the NEC to hasten the President's removal.
In a statement, they declared their “full support and confidence” in Ramaphosa’s leadership, asserting its significance for both Luthuli House and the Union Buildings as part of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
“The ANC Women’s League is outraged at the alleged plot by some ANC National Executive Committee members, who want to see the President removed from office,” the League stated. “We would like to deposit our full support along with all our structures in the leadership of the President.” This declaration underscores a significant sentiment within the party, rallying against what they view as unfounded allegations detrimental to party unity.
Meanwhile, the Youth League, represented by Secretary General Mtuwoxolo Ngudle, vehemently rejected claims of a planned recall of the President, labelling them “baseless”. Ngudle expressed that these rumors were mere attempts to destabilise the ANC at a critical time, as the party gears up for its 5th National General Council (NGC) aimed at critical assessments of its progress and strategic direction.
“We will not allow detractors or gossip mongers to weaponise lies against the movement,” Ngudle asserted, further urging anyone spreading such narratives to step forward and take responsibility for their claims. “Unity is paramount as we advance toward our objectives,” he added, reaffirming the Youth League’s strong allegiance to Ramaphosa’s presidency.
In a similar vein, the Veterans League, led by Snuki Zikalala, echoed sentiments of solidarity with the President. During his political report, Zikalala cautioned against potential threats both within and outside the ANC, asserting that the current NEC, elected in 2022, continues to enjoy the full support of the Veterans League.
He called for discussions regarding leadership changes to be postponed until after the next national conference in 2027, reinforcing the notion that stability is vital in these turbulent times.
“Unity of the ANC shall always remain sacrosanct,” Zikalala insisted. The Veterans League has emphasised its commitment toward renewal within the ANC, proposing measures that highlight ethical leadership and electoral reform as primary topics for consideration at the upcoming NGC.
