AmaNdebele King Makhosonke II dies at 65 after four decades on the thron
South Africa is mourning the passing of His Majesty King Makhosonke II, the revered leader of the amaNdebele Nation, who died on Tuesday at the age of 65 after serving as king for 40 years.
His Majesty King Makhosonke II, born Enock Makhosonke Mabhena and reigning King of the amaNdebele Nation, has passed away at the age of 65.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, with tributes pouring in for the traditional leader who spent four decades on the throne as King of the amaNdebele akwaManala.
In a message of condolence, it was noted that the nation shares in the grief of the Royal Household, led by Her Majesty Queen Sekhothali, as well as the amaNdebele people and the Basotho nation, from whom the Queen is descended.
King Makhosonke II was widely respected for his commitment to promoting unity, development and cultural heritage. During his reign, he championed key causes including education and land restitution, which formed part of his long-term vision for the advancement of his people.
The late monarch is remembered as a pillar of national unity in South Africa's diverse society and a dedicated leader who worked to improve the lives of his community while preserving the traditions of the amaNdebele Nation.
