Two bodyguards of alleged kingpin Katiso “KT” Molefe were arrested outside the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court after being found with two AKM rifles and ammunition without valid permits. The vehicle transporting the men was also seized, and the bodyguards are expected to face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Two bodyguards aged 24 and 36 were arrested outside the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after being found in possession of two semi-automatic AKM rifles and ammunition without valid permits.
The men were reportedly escorting a high-profile accused, Katiso “KT” Molefe, who is currently facing charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering related to alleged irregularities in government procurement contracts.
Molefe, a well-known businessman in Gauteng, and alleged kingpin appeared in court earlier on Wednesday. He was granted bail of R400 000 two months ago and is out on conditions that include regular reporting to authorities and surrendering his travel documents.
The bodyguards’ arrest came as Molefe attended a separate hearing for his ongoing case, raising questions about security arrangements and the legality of firearms in the presence of high-risk accused individuals.
Police confirmed that the two bodyguards did not have valid permits for the rifles or ammunition found in their possession. In addition, the vehicle transporting the men was seized after it was discovered that the license disk did not correspond with the registration number plates. Authorities are investigating whether the bodyguards’ actions were connected to Molefe’s security detail or part of a wider breach of firearm regulations.
SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said, “Our officers acted swiftly to remove illegal weapons from circulation and ensure public safety outside the court. The matter will proceed through the judicial process, and the accused bodyguards will face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.”
The bodyguards are expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court for a bail hearing and further proceedings. Meanwhile, Molefe remains out on bail as investigations into his alleged financial crimes continue. The case has drawn significant media attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the serious charges he faces.
Authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity involving firearms to ensure safety in public spaces and adherence to the law.
