This new peace deal between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) marks a hopeful turning point in a long-standing conflict, potentially signaling the dawn of lasting harmony in the Great Lakes region.
The African Union (AU) has officially welcomed a significant peace deal between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its neighbouring country, Rwanda, a development that could pave the way for a lasting resolution to decades of conflict in the region.
The mutual agreement was concluded during a recent summit in the United States, where DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, took part in Donald Trump-led peace talks.
The latest deal comes after the two countries in June 2025, signed a peace agreement through their foreign ministers.
However, this deal failed to yield desired results as each side continued to accuse the other of violating the terms of the deal.
On Thursday, Trump thanked the two leaders for finally agreeing to terms, saying he has faith that this new deal will result in a permanent cease-fire between the two countries, following decades of conflict.
It is also hoped that this deal will result in the disarmament of rebel groups, provisions for refugees to return home, and a new framework for economic prosperity.
"I have a lot of confidence in both leaders. We'll keep these commitments, Trump said.
On Friday, in a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed the peace agreement, saying it is this development is a significant milestone in the pursuit of lasting peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes region.
Ali Youssouf acknowledged and appreciated the constructive support provided by the United States, including the personal engagement of President Donald Trump, whose commitment helped create conditions conducive to this outcome.
He also commends the State of Qatar for its diplomatic backing and support, for its readiness to support African-led peace initiatives.
The Chairperson, who joined other African Heads of State in witnessing this historic signing in Washington, DC, USA, commends the decisive and sustained leadership that made this agreement possible.
“I would also like to pay a special tribute to H.E. President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo for his ongoing facilitation, H.E. President João Lourenço of Angola for his earlier mediation efforts, and the complementary roles played by leaders of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) throughout the process,” he said.
Youssouf further called on all parties to faithfully implement the agreement in both letter and spirit, ensuring that this moment becomes a foundation for reconciliation, regional cooperation, and sustainable peace.
The African Union Commission stands ready to accompany the parties and regional mechanisms in advancing this vital process for the benefit of the peoples of the DRC, Rwanda, and the wider region.
Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the peace talks, Kagame praised Trump, describing him as an “even-handed leader”, who does not take sides.
"More importantly, President Trump's approach is pragmatic. "As a result, we have the clearest and most viable path forward that we have ever had,” he said.
