A woman passenger was killed and two others, including the co‑driver, wounded when a long‑distance bus from Mthatha to Cape Town was sprayed with bullets on the R61 between Cofimvaba and Ngcobo. Authorities are investigating the attack and appealing for public assistance.
A long‑distance bus operated by Makalala Trans, travelling from Mthatha to Cape Town, came under attack on Wednesday afternoon on the R61 between Cofimvaba and Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape. A female passenger was fatally shot at the scene, while two others, including the co‑driver, sustained injuries.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha condemned the attack as senseless and barbaric, emphasising that commuter safety and the integrity of the transport system must be protected. He suggested that the shooting could be linked to turf disputes or unfair competition in the public transport sector, noting the incident occurred during a peak travel period.
Authorities are appealing to the public for information that could help identify and apprehend those responsible. The transport department extended condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured a full recovery.
