United Democratic Movement (UDM) councillor Luxolo Namette was shot and killed in Motherwell, Gqeberha, on Saturday afternoon.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the body of a 45-year-old man was found in Umnulu Street, NU9, Motherwell, at approximately 15:50 on 7 November 2026.
Police said the man had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
A murder case has been opened and is being investigated by SAPS Motherwell. Police said the motive for the killing and the identity of the suspect or suspects are still under investigation.
The killing comes shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 Local Government Elections, with the UDM mourning Namette as one of its members and public representatives.
UDM Secretary-General Bulelani Bobotyana expressed shock and sadness following Namette’s death, saying the councillor’s murder had cast a dark shadow over the party’s participation in the elections.
“What should have been a time of reflection on the hard work and sacrifices of our members has instead been overshadowed by this senseless act of violence,” the party said.
Namette’s political career began in the UDM Youth Vanguard, where he was described as an outspoken and energetic young activist.
Bobotyana said Namette was known for his quick wit, intelligence and strong political views before growing into an experienced public representative.
He was later entrusted with chairing the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), where he continued serving as a municipal representative.
The UDM described Namette as a committed party member whose death had left its leadership and members deeply affected.
“He was one of our own, and his murder has shaken us to the core,” the party said.
The party has called for an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the councillor’s death.
The UDM said it expected those responsible to be identified and brought to justice.
