Two arrested in Zolani Tete murder case
Police have arrested two people in connection with the murder of former boxing world champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, with the SAPS warning that more arrests are expected.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested two persons of interest in connection with the murder of former boxing world champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete.
Tete, 38, was fatally shot outside his home in NU 17, Mdantsane, on Friday, 21 August 2026.
In a statement on Saturday police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said Tete was arriving at his home when two men wearing balaclavas reportedly got out of a vehicle and opened fire on him.
He was declared dead at the scene.
A 27-year-old woman who was travelling with Tete was also shot multiple times during the attack. She was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
Gantana said the two suspects, aged 30 and 22, were arrested in Ku Gompo on Saturday, 22 August, following an intelligence-driven operation involving several law enforcement units.
The suspects are currently in custody and are being questioned in connection with Tete's murder and the attempted murder of the woman who was wounded in the shooting.
Police have not disclosed the possible motive or further circumstances surrounding the arrests, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation.
The police have also warned members of the public and media against speculation or sharing unverified information, saying this could jeopardise the investigation and the integrity of future court proceedings.
The SAPS commended the law enforcement team involved in the arrests and appealed to anyone with credible information about the shooting to come forward.
Police said all information received will be treated confidentially.
