SIU hunts for eight luxury cars allegedly hidden by Hangwani Maumela

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is searching for eight luxury vehicles, including four Ferraris, three Porsches and a Bentley, allegedly linked to Tembisa Hospital investigation suspect Hangwani Morgan Maumela. The latest operation in Midrand failed to locate a Bentley believed to have been concealed at an associate’s property.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is pursuing information about eight luxury vehicles allegedly linked to businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, as it moves to enforce a court order placing the assets under the control of an appointed curator.

The outstanding vehicles include four Ferraris, three Porsches and one Bentley.

The latest operation took place at a property in Midrand, Johannesburg, following an anonymous whistleblower report alleging that a Bentley belonging to Maumela had been hidden at a property linked to one of his associates.

The SIU-appointed curator and the investigation team visited the premises to verify the information. However, the vehicle was not found.

Despite the unsuccessful search, the SIU said it would continue pursuing all eight vehicles in accordance with the Special Tribunal's orders.

The curator is acting in terms of two previous court orders directing that the vehicles be placed under the curator's control.

In October 2025, the Special Tribunal ordered the group referred to as the "Maumela Syndicate" to provide a full and frank written disclosure, under oath, of all its property and assets.

The disclosure includes movable and immovable property, funds, debts and claims, as well as assets in which the implicated respondents have registered or beneficial ownership, or any other legal interest.

The SIU said the curator was also tracing and preserving additional properties, assets and funds to give effect to the preservation order.

Last year, the unit obtained an order to preserve assets valued at approximately R900 million linked to the alleged syndicate. The curator is currently working to give effect to a preservation order valued at R503 million.

The SIU is authorised under Proclamation 136 of 2023 to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration involving the Gauteng Department of Health and Tembisa Hospital.

The investigation focuses on alleged wrongdoing involving the hospital and the syndicate.

In terms of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act 74 of 1996, the SIU has powers to obtain bank statements and cellphone records, search and seize evidence, and question witnesses under oath.

The unit can also institute civil proceedings in the High Court or the Special Tribunal to recover financial losses suffered by the State and remedy wrongdoing uncovered during investigations.

Any evidence pointing to criminal conduct will be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for possible prosecution.
