The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has called on beneficiaries whose social grants are under review to ensure their personal information is accurate and to submit all required documents to complete the review process.
The agency said review notifications are sent via SMS using the contact details recorded on its database, making it essential for beneficiaries to update any changes to their cellphone numbers, residential addresses, financial circumstances or travel outside South Africa.
In a statement the agency said that grant reviews are a legal requirement aimed at ensuring social assistance is paid only to eligible beneficiaries. The process also helps protect the integrity of the social assistance system, prevent fraud and abuse, and maintain an accurate and up-to-date beneficiary database.
Beneficiaries are required to notify SASSA of any changes to their marital status, contact details, income, financial circumstances, or any other information that could affect their eligibility for a grant.
When reporting for a grant review, beneficiaries should bring a valid South African ID, proof of income or an affidavit if unemployed, three months' bank statements, proof of residence and, where applicable, documents confirming their marital status, such as a marriage certificate, divorce order or death certificate of a spouse. Additional grant-specific supporting documents may also be required depending on the type of grant.
SASSA said keeping beneficiary information up to date will help ensure grants are administered efficiently while reducing unnecessary payment delays and interruptions.
