Ramaphosa lifts suspension of national police commissioner Fannie Masemola
President Cyril Ramaphosa has lifted the precautionary suspension of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who is expected to resume his full duties on Monday, 19 October.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has lifted the precautionary suspension of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who will resume his full duties on Monday, 19 October 2026.
Masemola’s suspension was agreed upon in April 2026 following his appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court, where he faced charges relating to the alleged contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
In a statement on Friday, the Presidency said the National Director of Public Prosecutions instructed on 15 September 2026 that the charges against Masemola be withdrawn.
The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court formally withdrew the charges on 22 September 2026.
Ramaphosa welcomed Masemola’s return to his duties and thanked Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane for serving as acting national police commissioner during his suspension.
The Presidency announced the decision in a statement on Friday, 16 October 2026.
