VP Justice Foundation backs investigation into KZN Hawks officer

The VP Justice Foundation has welcomed an IPID search at KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Lieutenant-Colonel Deenadayalan “Deena” Govender’s home amid questions over R2.3 million deposited into his bank account and allegations raised at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

The VP Justice Foundation has voiced its support for the ongoing investigations involving KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Lieutenant-Colonel Deenadayalan "Deena" Govender, following recent raids linked to a controversy that has raised serious questions about police integrity in the province.

These developments come amid Govender's implication in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which has scrutinised numerous police shootings in the region.

In a significant move last week, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) executed a search warrant at Govender's residence after troubling allegations were presented at the commission.

Reports indicate that Govender was questioned about a staggering R2.3 million deposited into his bank account during a crucial period between August 22 and December 23, coinciding with a deadly police operation in Durban that resulted in numerous fatalities.

During his testimony, Govender struggled to provide satisfactory explanations for these deposits, leading to further scrutiny. He claimed that R1.5 million of the funds stemmed from a personal loan with First National Bank, while the remaining amount derived from unspecified sources.

However, witnesses, including esteemed IPID investigator Len John, have expressed concerns that these payments may be tied to criminal activities. Notably, they alluded to the shocking murder of Durban tow-truck operator Bevan Loftus, which unfolded amidst the tumultuous backdrop of police operations in the city.

Visham Panday, spokesperson for the VP Justice Foundation, underscored the significance of the investigation. In a statement, he commented, "Our foundation welcomes the recent search. Given Lieutenant-Colonel Deena Govender’s position within the police service, this development raises serious concerns. No officer, regardless of rank or position, should be above scrutiny or accountability. The public deserves answers, and any concerns arising from this investigation must be properly addressed."

The inquiry delves deeper into the disturbing implications of the police operation in April 2023, which left five men dead, including Loftus and fellow victims Ryan Santos, Chase Fynn, Michigan Hippolyte, and Sihle Zondi. The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated, as it unveils the shadowy corners of law enforcement dealings in KZN.

As the investigation progresses, IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed the execution of the search but refrained from providing any detailed information, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Govender’s legal counsel, Anand Nepaul, expressed astonishment over the leak of sensitive information to the media, arguing that such details should remain confidential until the inquiry reaches completion.

In parallel to these developments, the VP Justice Foundation also welcomed the arrest of "bogus doctor" Reshal Dayanand. Accused of fraud and operating with a fraudulent medical degree, Dayanand, 39, briefly appeared before the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court. He is alleged to have registered falsely as a doctor and worked as an intern at Northdale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg prior to his arrest. Following his first court appearance over a week ago, he was released on warning.
