Ramaphosa extends condolences to Tanzanian President following husband's death
President Cyril Ramaphosa, as SADC Chairperson, has conveyed heartfelt condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died while receiving treatment for a cardiac condition.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his capacity as SADC Chairperson, has extended his condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.
Hassan, 71, died on Monday, 7 September 2026, while receiving treatment for a cardiac condition. He was known for his distinguished career as an agricultural academic and agriculturalist.
Ramaphosa said his thoughts were with President Hassan, her children and the extended family during the difficult time. He also conveyed his sympathies to the government and people of Tanzania, a founding member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
“As the people of our region, we reach out in our hearts and prayers to President Hassan and the nation of Tanzania in this difficult moment,” Ramaphosa said.
“We offer you our heartfelt condolences and wish you strength and comfort as you mourn the loss of an outstanding citizen and partner.”
The message comes as leaders across the Southern African region stand with President Hassan and Tanzania following the loss of the country's former First Gentleman.
