Second suspected drug mule arrested at OR Tambo in four days
A second alleged drug mule has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in just four days after police seized cocaine worth more than R800,000 from luggage belonging to a passenger allegedly bound for Hong Kong.
Police have arrested a second alleged drug trafficker at OR Tambo International Airport in less than a week, seizing cocaine worth more than R800,000 as authorities intensify efforts to disrupt international drug trafficking networks.
A 45-year-old man was intercepted on Monday while allegedly preparing to board a flight to Hong Kong, China. Police acted on intelligence-driven information and searched his luggage, where approximately two kilograms of suspected cocaine were found.
The arrest follows a similar bust at the airport just four days earlier, when a 54-year-old alleged drug mule travelling to Hong Kong was arrested after cocaine was allegedly discovered concealed in his luggage.
The latest arrest raises fresh concerns about OR Tambo International Airport being used as a transit point by suspected international drug trafficking syndicates, with both suspects allegedly heading to the same destination.
The 45-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court this week on drug-related charges.
Police say the successive arrests demonstrate continued intelligence-driven operations aimed at identifying and dismantling drug trafficking networks operating through South Africa's ports of entry.
