R2m dagga haul seized as K9 unit busts alleged drug traffickers in Mpumalanga
An intelligence-driven operation by SAPS K9 and organised crime detectives has uncovered dagga worth an estimated R2 million, with two suspects arrested and a vehicle allegedly used to transport the drugs seized.
Two alleged drug traffickers have been arrested after police intercepted a consignment of dagga worth an estimated R2 million during an intelligence-driven operation in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.
The suspects, aged 33 and 26, were arrested on Tuesday by members of the White River K9 Unit and the Provincial Detectives Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
Police said officers seized 16 bales of dagga with an estimated street value of R2 million during the operation. A Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie, allegedly used to transport the drugs, was also confiscated.
The pair is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on charges of dealing in dagga.
Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the officers for disrupting the alleged drug trafficking operation.
"I commend our K9 and Organised Crime Investigation Unit members for their vigilance and teamwork. We will continue to target dagga and drug dealers and disrupt the supply chain to ensure that our communities, especially the youth, are safe," Mkhwanazi said.
The latest seizure forms part of SAPS' ongoing crackdown on organised crime and the illicit drug trade in Mpumalanga, with police reiterating their commitment to dismantling trafficking networks operating across the province.
