Prime Minister Modi warmly welcomed in South Africa ahead of G20 Summit

As Modi gears up for the upcoming summit and meetings, the atmosphere in South Africa is one of anticipation and excitement, highlighting the importance of the Indian community and the ties that bind these two nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received a rousing welcome upon his arrival in South Africa on Friday, marking the beginning of his significant three-state visit for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The Prime Minister’s journey commenced with a promise of strengthening ties and fostering goodwill between India and South Africa, particularly within the Indian diaspora.

Upon landing at the Waterkloof Air Force Base (AFB), Modi was greeted with a traditional welcome, complete with cultural performances that showcased the rich heritage of both nations.

As soon as he stepped out of the private plane, Modie quipped: "Landed in Johannesburg for the G20 Summit related engagements. Look forward to productive discussions with world leaders on key global issues. Our focus will be on strengthening cooperation, advancing development priorities and ensuring a better future for all.

Several media reports have indicated that Modi is set to engage in bilateral meetings with fellow leaders in Johannesburg, as well as participate in the 6th summit of the IBSA, which consists of India, Brazil, and South Africa.

In a prelude to this visit, on Thursday, High Commissioner of South Africa in India, Professor Anil Sooklal, highlighted the Indian government's recent extension of the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card issuance to descendants of Indian origin up to the 7th generation, a move which exhibits India’s commitment to its diaspora in South Africa.

The announcement of the Government of India extending the registration facility for issuance of OCI card to the descendants of 5th, 6th and 7th generations came just hours before Modi was to set his foot on South African soil ahead of the leaders' summit this weekend.

This is where Modi, will alongside his South African counterpart President Cyril Ramaphosa and other world leaders will engage on various multilateral discussions aimed at moving the Global North much closer to the Global South countries for sustainable development aimed at fighting glaring inequalities between nations.

This announcement has resonated positively with many, including Modi, who expressed his delight on official social media platforms.

“The Indian diaspora in South Africa is very happy with the Government of India’s decision of extending the OCI facility up to 7th Generation Persons of Indian Origin in South Africa.

"Earlier, it was only available up to the 4th generation. This strengthens our enduring linkages with the dynamic Indian community in South Africa,” Modi shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

During his first day in Johannesburg, Modi also took time to enjoy traditional musical performances, expressing his appreciation with heartfelt comments.

He recalled watching the South African Girmitiya song ‘Ganga Maiya’, which resonated deeply with his experience as he noted, “It was a gladdening and moving experience for me to witness a performance... This song carries with it hope and unbroken spirit of those who came here many years ago. They faced numerous hardships on the way, but that did not deter them. They kept India alive in their hearts through songs and prayers. Thus, it is commendable to see this cultural connect kept alive.”
