Tembisa Hospital
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has dismissed claims linking President Cyril Ramaphosa to Hangwani Maumela, implicated in the R2 billion Tembisa Hospital fraud case. Magwenya said Ramaphosa has never met Maumela and was unaware the Sandhurst house shown in viral videos belonged to him.
President Cyril Ramaphosa's office has moved swiftly to dismiss allegations suggesting a personal relationship between himself and Hangwani Morgan Maumela, a key figure implicated in a fraud syndicate connected to the Tembisa Hospital.
The controversy emerged following the seizure of Maumela's luxurious properties and vehicles by the Special Investigative Unit (SIU), an action taken in response to an extensive investigation into more than R2 billion in tender irregularities linked to the hospital.
SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that Maumela has been identified as a pivotal player in what authorities describe as a grand theft operation that thrived over three years.
The investigation has drawn considerable media attention, particularly after video footage surfaced on social media purportedly showing President Ramaphosa near Maumela's opulent Sandhurst residence.
On the weekend, Ramaphosa admitted that he was once married to Maumela’s aunt, but insists he has never met him nor has he had personal or business relationship with him.
On Monday, Magwenya moved swiftly to address the media over this matter, saying there is no basis for the President to be associated with Muamela as he did not know that the home he posed for pictures was owned by Maumela, whose only link to him is his aunt.
“We do note that there is an ongoing desperate attempt by the media and others on social media to continue perpetuating this falsehood to link the President to this gentleman. We have gone further to even obtain confirmation from T-bo Touch that the video and pictures formed part of his original post,” he said.
According to Magwenya, the post which has gone viral and set tongues wagging on social media is a 2023 incident in which the President had gone out for a walk with Jomo Sibiya when they were met by the popular DJ outside Maumela’s Sandhurst home ,which according to the President is a block or two away from his own residence.
“He (T-bo Touch) was coming from the airport, he says, going to the Sandton Hotel with Bishop Noel Jones at the time. I am informed that this house was undergoing construction.Again, the President had no knowledge whose house it was. We therefore reject, the understanding that the President had been visiting Maumela’s house. That is very far from the truth,” Magwenya added.
Magwenya indicated that Ramaphosa previously gathered his immediate family members [Maumela was not part of the meeting] and instructed them to avoid or end any business dealings with the state.
"It is worth also to mention that just before the President was appointed as the Deputy President, he gathered his immediate family and close relatives and gave them strict instructions not to do business with the state, and Maumela was not part of that meeting as he is not the President's immediate family,'' he stated.
