Madlanga Commission
Law-enforcement authorities have identified three persons of interest in the fatal shooting of former EMPD officer and Madlanga Commission witness Marius van der Merwe. One suspect is already in custody as investigators intensify efforts and tighten protection for other witnesses.
Police revealed on Monday that they have identified three persons of interest in the fatal shooting of former Ekurhuleni metro police officer and Madlanga Commission witness Marius van der Merwe. One of the suspects is already in custody after being taken in for questioning.
Van der Merwe, known at the inquiry as “Witness D,” was shot dead outside his home in Brakpan late on Friday night. His testimony at the commission exposed alleged corruption and a cover-up involving senior police officials.
At a media briefing, the national police commissioner announced the development and said investigators will pursue the case with urgency. He affirmed that law-enforcement agencies are working closely with the commission to ensure all witnesses receive heightened protection.
Authorities also confirmed they are analysing CCTV footage and other evidence that may assist in securing more arrests. The probe remains active as investigators seek to piece together what happened and who was involved.
Civil society organisations and political parties have demanded stronger witness-protection measures following the murder. The killing has renewed calls for the government to ensure those who come forward in major corruption inquiries are safeguarded against intimidation and violence.
