A suspect wanted in connection with multiple serious and violent crimes, including murder and a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery, was shot dead during a shootout with police at Maydon Wharf in Durban on Monday.
A case of attempted murder of police officers has been opened at Maydon Wharf police station, while investigations into the suspect’s alleged involvement in the various violent crimes are continuing.
KwaZulu-Natal police said the incident happened after officers received intelligence that the armed suspect was travelling towards the Durban central business district.
According to police, the suspect was being sought for murder and attempted murder cases reported in the Sawoti area earlier this month.
He was also linked to a separate case in Mbumbulu, where four people were killed, as well as a cash-in-transit robbery in Umlazi on Friday, 5 December 2025.
Police and Metro Police officers moved in after the intelligence was operationalised and spotted the suspect travelling in a minibus taxi. However, before officers could intercept the vehicle, it allegedly drove straight towards them while shots were fired.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said police returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. Magwaza said two firearms were recovered at the scene.
He said one pistol was found in the suspect’s possession, while another was recovered inside the minibus taxi. No police officers were injured during the shootout.
