Mashatile to visit Bronkhorstspruit following water crisis

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is expected to assess water treatment infrastructure and the government’s response to about 408 reported gastrointestinal illness cases linked to suspected contaminated water in Bronkhorstspruit.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is scheduled to visit Bronkhorstspruit in the City of Tshwane, Gauteng, on Monday, 26 October, following reports of gastrointestinal illness linked to the consumption of suspected contaminated water.

According to the Presidency, approximately 408 cases of gastrointestinal illness have been reported in the area, with the incident linked to water suspected of being contaminated and associated with the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works.

The visit forms part of the work of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Water and Sanitation, chaired by Mashatile, which coordinates government interventions to address water and sanitation challenges, improve oversight and accelerate responses to service delivery concerns.

During the visit, Mashatile will inspect the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works to assess the condition of its infrastructure and receive updates on measures being implemented to address water quality concerns and restore a safe and reliable water supply.

He will also visit patients receiving treatment at Bronkhorstspruit District Hospital to receive updates on their condition and the healthcare response to the reported illnesses.

The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality has been leading response efforts, including assessments of the affected infrastructure and interventions aimed at protecting public health and restoring access to safe water.

The Presidency said the visit would provide an opportunity for the Deputy President to assess progress and engage with the municipality and relevant government departments on coordinated action and accountability in resolving the crisis.

Mashatile will be accompanied by Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, Deputy Minister David Mahlobo, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo, Gauteng Health MEC Faith Mazibuko and Tshwane Executive Mayor Nasiphi Moya, among other government officials.

The programme will begin at 9am with a visit to the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works, followed by a visit to Bronkhorstspruit District Hospital at 10am. A media opportunity is scheduled for 11am.
