Lucas Legabe granted R50,000 bail in alleged R216m cocaine theft

Lucas Legabe, the man accused of stealing 541kg of cocaine worth an estimated R216 million from the Hawks’ Port Shepstone offices, has been granted R50,000 bail.

Legabe appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the court granted him bail with several conditions.

It is alleged that Legabe broke into the Hawks offices in November 2021 and stole the drugs, which had been seized by police and were being kept as evidence.

As part of his bail conditions, Legabe must remain at his stated residential address and may not change it without the written consent of the investigating officer.

He was also ordered to surrender all passports and travel documents to the investigating officer and may not apply for replacement travel documents while the case is ongoing.

Legabe must report to Brooklyn Police Station in Victoria every Monday between 6am and 6pm.

The court further ordered him not to directly or indirectly harass, intimidate, influence or communicate with any state witnesses whose identities become known to him.

He is also prohibited from interfering with the police investigation and must attend court whenever required until the matter is finalised.

The magistrate warned that failure to appear in court could result in a warrant being issued for his arrest and the forfeiture of his bail to the state.

The investigating officer will be furnished with a copy of the bail order.
