Four Correctional Services officials suspended over alleged coal tender fraud

Four senior officials in the Department of Correctional Services, including the department’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), have been suspended over allegations of fraud involving a coal supply tender.

The department said the officials’ suspension will remain in place pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations.

A criminal case has also been opened with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.

The department said a forensic investigation would be conducted to determine the full extent of any irregularities and ensure that those found responsible face prosecution.

“When he was appointed Minister of Correctional Services, Dr Pieter Groenewald identified the fight against corruption and fraud, as well as ensuring consequences for officials who transgress, as his top priority,” the department said.

The department welcomed what it described as a breakthrough in the matter and assured that it would fully cooperate with investigators.

It said the process was aimed at ensuring that those found guilty of wrongdoing are held accountable.
