Seven people were shot dead and three others wounded in a late-night mass shooting in Marikana, Philippi East, with police suspecting the attack may be linked to extortion in the area.
Seven people, including a woman, were killed in a mass shooting in the Marikana area of Philippi East in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The shooting took place shortly after midnight, when gunmen opened fire on a group of people. Three other victims survived the attack but sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.
Police confirmed that the deceased were between the ages of 30 and 50. A heavy police presence was deployed to the area following the incident, and an investigation has since been launched.
Authorities suspect that the deadly shooting may be connected to extortion-related activities that have been affecting the area. No arrests have been made so far, and police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
