Eight killed in Limpopo crash involving Malawi-Johannesburg bus
At least eight people have died after a Malawian passenger bus travelling to Johannesburg was involved in a horrific crash on the N1 near the Witvlag turn-off in Limpopo.
A tragic bus accident on the N1 near the Witvlag turn-off in Limpopo has claimed the lives of at least eight people and left several others injured.
The crash involved a Malawian passenger bus travelling from Malawi to Johannesburg when the accident occurred on Thursday evening.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, emergency personnel, police, and traffic officials responded swiftly to the scene as rescue and recovery operations got underway.
About 17 passengers sustained injuries and were treated at the scene before being transported to nearby medical facilities. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of passengers who were travelling on the bus.
The accident caused major traffic disruptions along the busy N1 route, with motorists urged to use alternative routes and remain patient while officials cleared the scene.
The Witvlag turn-off, located between Makhado and Musina, has previously been the site of serious road accidents involving buses and heavy vehicles.
The cause of the crash is suspected to be mechanical failure and authorities say more information will be released once investigations are completed.
