Family of 16-year-old Thabang Mazibuko challenges police account as investigations get underway.
The fatal shooting of 16-year-old Thabang Mazibuko has raised serious concern and put a spotlight on police conduct.
Mazibuko was shot and killed in Diepsloot by two officers who were reportedly in an unmarked vehicle and not wearing uniforms. Reports say he was trying to help his friend during a confrontation with police. He then tried to run away but was shot several times.
The South African Police Service has opened cases of murder, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property. However, Mazibuko’s family has questioned the police version of events. They say CCTV footage shows the officers did not have visible injuries after the incident.
Police claim the teenager had a firearm and a panga, and say one officer was shot while another was stabbed during the confrontation.
The case is now being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, which is reconstructing the scene to determine exactly what happened.
