Walmart is set to open its first branded store in South Africa at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort. The outlet will offer groceries, fresh produce, homeware, electronics and apparel while combining global brands with local products. The move marks a major step in expanding Walmart’s footprint into the South African retail market.
Walmart is making its official entry into the South African market with the announcement that Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort will host the country’s first Walmart‑branded store. The store, operating under Massmart, will employ 80 staff and offer a wide range of products including fresh and frozen food, groceries, health and beauty items, apparel for all ages, homeware, electronics, toys and seasonal merchandise.
The outlet will blend locally sourced products with international brands, giving shoppers access to goods not commonly found in South Africa. Among the global products featured will be actress‑turned‑entrepreneur Drew Barrymore’s “Beautiful” range of small appliances such as pastel-coloured air fryers, kettles, blenders, toasters and stand mixers. The store will also carry imported confectionery brands including Mike & Ike, Reese’s, Warheads and Nerds.
Mark Scott, Massmart’s merchandise vice-president, emphasised that the store is designed to provide a sense of discovery for customers, encouraging exploration across departments. The retail layout prioritises bright lighting, wide aisles and an intuitive flow between sections, with efficient checkout systems and attentive staff to enhance the shopping experience.
Onicca Mothapo has been appointed store manager. With 20 years of experience in retail, she described her role as a personal milestone, having progressed from cashier to managing the first Walmart-branded store in South Africa.
The store will also engage with the local community, partnering with Africa Food for Thought to support eight early childhood development centres in the area. Donations will include appliances, catering equipment and multi-purpose furniture to benefit the centres.
While the official opening date has not yet been confirmed, the announcement signals Walmart’s long-awaited expansion into South Africa, introducing its global retail expertise and product range to local consumers and further shaping the country’s competitive retail landscape.
