Brown Mogotsi bail application postponed to 25 May 2026

Political fixer Brown Mogotsi’s bail application has been postponed to 25 May 2026 as police revealed that the firearm allegedly used in his reported assassination attempt is linked through ballistic evidence to previous robbery and murder investigations.

Political fixer Brown Mogotsi’s bail application has been postponed to 25 May 2026 after he appeared briefly before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Mogotsi was arrested on Friday evening shortly after testifying before the Madlanga Commission and faces charges including perjury, defeating the ends of justice, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a municipal area.

Police believe the shooting incident involving Mogotsi in Vosloorus in November 2025 was orchestrated and allege that he staged the assassination attempt on himself.

At the time of the incident, Mogotsi claimed that unknown gunmen ambushed him while he was driving a red Chevrolet. His vehicle was reportedly riddled with bullets during the alleged attack.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said outside court that ballistic evidence gathered during the investigation contradicts Mogotsi’s version of events and links the firearm allegedly used during the incident to previous violent crimes.

Mathe said that the ballistic reports connected the firearm to a 2020 armed robbery case in which a motorist was robbed and a shot was fired. Although the victim survived unharmed, cases of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder were opened.

She said police further linked the same firearm to a 2021 shooting incident in Eldorado Park, where a man in his 30s was shot and killed at a drinking establishment while another person survived with gunshot wounds. The matter is being investigated as murder and attempted murder.

Police confirmed that the firearm allegedly used in the shooting involving Mogotsi’s vehicle has not yet been recovered.

Authorities also said they cannot rule out the possibility that Mogotsi may have acted with others.

“This is an opportunity for Mr Brown Mogotsi to cooperate with police and tell us the truth about what happened on that particular evening and what the motive was behind allegedly staging an assassination attempt on his own life,” Mathe said.

She warned the public against opening false criminal cases or providing misleading information to law enforcement authorities.

Mogotsi will remain behind bars.
