Two people have been killed and several others injured in a shooting at the Booysens Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement and the Department of Justice.
At least five people were wounded, with two fatalities reported, following a shooting at the Booysens Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
In a statement, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development has condemned the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with security and law enforcement authorities to ensure the safety of court users and personnel.
"The incident is still active, and law enforcement agencies are attending to the situation. At this stage, it has been reported that five people were shot, with two fatalities," the ministry said.
Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Andries Nel is expected to visit the court to assess the situation firsthand. The Ministry said it is awaiting verified details from law enforcement agencies and court management.
The Ministry has indicated that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
