Suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi denied bail in Pretoria North

Court finds Fannie Nkosi poses a risk to the justice system after weapons, cash and police dockets were discovered at his home.

Suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi has been denied bail by the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court following his arrest earlier this month.

Nkosi was taken into custody after a raid at his Pretoria North residence, where authorities allegedly found multiple police dockets, a stun grenade, more than 400 rounds of live ammunition, and over R50,000 in cash.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Thandi Theledi said the matter falls under a Schedule 5 bail application, placing the burden on Nkosi to prove why he should be released.

The court heard that Nkosi, who had been suspended from the South African Police Service, was required to return all official property but had only partially complied.

Despite photographic evidence presented in court, Nkosi denied being in possession of a stun grenade — a claim the magistrate said undermined his credibility.

“The court is only concerned with whether the interests of justice permit his release on bail,” Theledi stated, adding that bail proceedings are not intended to determine guilt or innocence.

The magistrate found that Nkosi failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the items discovered at his home and warned that his release could pose a danger and potentially undermine the justice system.

“The accused’s conduct is inconsistent with that expected of a police officer, and he has failed to provide assurance that he will not interfere with investigations,” the court ruled.

Bail was subsequently denied, with the court concluding that the interests of justice do not support his release.

Nkosi remains in custody and is expected to return to court on 21 May as investigations continue.
