Suliman Carrim to spend weekend in custody as bail hearing continues
Suliman Carrim will remain behind bars over the weekend after his bail application was postponed to Monday. The State is opposing his release, citing concerns that he could evade trial.
Businessman Suliman Carrim will spend the weekend in custody after his bail application was postponed in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Carrim appeared in court following his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday, 15 October, shortly before he was due to board an international flight.
He is accused of contravening Section 6(1) of the Commissions Act 8 of 1947 after allegedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 14 August 2026, despite having been warned to attend.
The State is opposing his release on bail, arguing that he could evade trial. Prosecutors also raised concerns about the verification of addresses submitted by the defence, saying this could make it difficult to locate him should he fail to attend further court proceedings.
The alleged failure to appear before the commission resulted in a criminal case being opened, which was investigated by the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team.
The court postponed the matter to Monday, 19 October, to allow for the verification of documents submitted by the defence and the continuation of the bail application.
