Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and colder weather expected across northern South Africa

Severe thunderstorms and significantly cooler temperatures are expected across the northern parts of South Africa as a cold front moves into the country from Monday evening.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng and large parts of Limpopo, with the storms potentially bringing hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and excessive lightning.

Stormy conditions are expected to intensify overnight into Tuesday morning, with severe thunderstorms in Limpopo spreading during the afternoon to parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Free State and Gauteng.

The heavy rainfall could increase the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas, while motorists and pedestrians may face hazardous travel conditions.

The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has urged members of the public to remain cautious and vigilant when travelling to and from work during the severe weather.

MISA Chief Executive Officer: Operations, Martlé Keyter, said the safety of workers and their families should remain the highest priority during periods of dangerous weather.

“Many of our members travel long distances to and from work every day, often during adverse weather conditions. We urge everyone to place their safety first and not take unnecessary risks by attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges or rivers,” said Keyter.

Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded roads where the depth of the water is uncertain and to exercise additional caution in areas experiencing heavy rain, poor visibility and strong winds.

With temperatures also expected to drop significantly, residents in affected areas are encouraged to prepare for the colder conditions while remaining alert to weather warnings and changing road conditions.
