Sandile Zungu's SAFA Presidency campaign is a mission at the right time
Into this arena steps Sandile Zungu, a man whose business acumen and record of ethical leadership suggest his campaign for the SAFA presidency is exactly the mission South African football needs right now.
In a nation where football the real National Sport of Mzansi is often called the "Beautiful Game," the governance of the sport has, far too long, been anything but beautiful. Allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and a "weaponised" constitution have long casted a over the South African Football Association (SAFA) .
Into this arena steps Sandile Zungu, a man whose business acumen and record of ethical leadership suggest his campaign for the SAFA presidency is exactly the mission South African football needs right now.
A Credible Leader for a Crisis of Trust
The incumbent, Danny Jordaan, has led SAFA for 13 years and is facing charges of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud involving R1.3 million of SAFA funds . Against
this backdrop, Zungu's entry into the race is not merely a challenge; it is a statement of intent. He promises to transform South African football by restoring good
governance and integrity and for that he certainly has the credentials to realise it.
Zungu's credibility is his greatest asset. As the founder of Zungu Investment Company (Zico), which has interests in mining, manufacturing, property, and forensics, he is
a billionaire businessman who has navigated the complex world of high finance for decades . He has played leading roles in business lobby organisations such as the
Black Business Council and the Brics Business Council . This is a man who understands how to manage resources, attract investment, and build sustainable
enterprises. This is not a man who would use SAFA as a means to feed at the trough as has been the case in many organisations. “A misstep on financial management can be fatal,” Zungu has stated. “So my commitment is to respect resources that are placed in my care, to account for every rand spent under my supervision” Sandile Zungu has been reported saying.
The Business of Football
Zungu's campaign is built on a clear and compelling vision: to run SAFA like a business . He points out that football is not just a source of national pride but a significant economic sector, contributing approximately R60 billion to South Africa's GDP. Yet, the sport does not enjoy the commercial support and sponsorship of codes such as rugby and cricket.
The reason, Zungu argues, is a profound trust deficit. “There’s a huge trust deficit between the top echelons of SA football and business interests,” he says .
He believes that commercial interests expect a certain level of ethical conduct and integrity from those leading the organisations they sponsor qualities he feels are currently lacking at SAFA .
With a businessman of his competence, skills and stature at the helm, he believes he can inspire corporate South Africa to trust and support football once more and increase its contribution to the GDP as our fiscus certainly needs it.
Rebuilding from the Ground Up
Zungu's mission extends beyond the boardroom. He has promised to promote grassroots development and schools soccer, and to improve programmes for women in the sport. This is a vision of football that nurtures talent from the ground up, ensuring that the next generation of players and administrators are given the opportunities they deserve.
He has been on a nationwide roadshow, visiting provinces across the country to galvanise support from the SAFA regions . His message is one of unity and renewal. “Focusing on the negatives and personalities is not what my campaign needs,” he said . Instead, he has chosen to present a positive message of rejuvenation under a new, business-minded broom, encapsulated by his campaign's title: "Vision 2030: Rebuilding SAFA House" .
A Call to Action
Those who support Zungu believe he can bring to South African football the kind of transformation that Patrice Motsepe has brought to the African continent . His campaign has garnered support from football legends like Lucas Radebe, as well as SAFA Vice-President Bennett Bailey, who dropped his own campaign to back Zungu.
South African football clearly for all to see stands at a crossroads. We can keep our blinkers on and continue down a path of stagnation and controversy, or we can choose a leader with the vision, integrity, and experience to usher in a new era.
Sandile Zungu's campaign is not just about winning an election; it is a mission to end the perfidious behaviour of the past and to restore the integrity and prosperity of the Beautiful Game and make it Beautiful indeed both on the field and off the field.
