The South African government has expressed its deepest condolences and sympathy to the people and Government of Australia following the deadly terrorist attack in Sydney.
Media reports indicate that at least 11 people were shot at Bondi Beach on Sunday in an incident that has been declared a terror attack, reportedly aimed at members of the Australian Jewish community.
In a statement, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said South Africa’s thoughts are with all those affected, particularly the families and loved ones of the victims. The department strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless act of violence that appears to have targeted Jewish worshippers observing Hanukkah at Bondi Beach.
“There is no justification for terrorism or for attacks against any group based on their faith or identity,” the statement read. “South Africa stands in solidarity with Australia during this time of mourning and grief.”
