Monnapule Saleng
José Riveiro has praised Monnapule Saleng’s resurgence at Orbit College, saying he is genuinely pleased to see the winger playing confidently again. After admitting he was “harsh” on him during their time at Pirates, Riveiro says Saleng’s return to form shows his resilience and undeniable talent.
Former Orlando Pirates coach José Riveiro has warmly praised the re-emergence of Monnapule Saleng, who has found his rhythm again at Orbit College after a difficult spell that once strained the relationship between the two.
Speaking during a recent radio interview, Riveiro reflected on the challenges Saleng faced during the 2024/25 season when he struggled for playing time and confidence at Pirates. He openly acknowledged that his own approach at the time had contributed to the tension. “I was harsh, and that was the beginning of a difficult period between us,” he said, adding that the intention had always been to push Saleng to higher standards, even if the outcome was unintended pressure.
Riveiro said watching the winger now, motivated, confident, and performing consistently, brings him a sense of satisfaction. According to him, Saleng’s renewed spark is evidence not only of his technical quality but also of his resilience and determination to rebuild his game.
“Monnapule is showing the talent we have always known he has,” Riveiro said. “I am happy he is playing football again, contributing to his team, and reclaiming the joy he had lost for a while.”
The coach’s comments mark a rare moment of public reflection, signalling a renewed respect between the two. For Riveiro, Saleng’s rebound at Orbit College is not just a personal triumph for the player but a sign of the maturity and character that can carry him back to the highest levels of South African football.
