Ramaphosa to lead National Heritage Day celebrations in Oudtshoorn

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Thursday, 24 September 2026, lead the National Heritage Day celebrations at Bongolethu Sport Stadium in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape.

This year’s National Heritage Day will be held under the theme, “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us.”

The theme highlights the role of living heritage in promoting national unity, social cohesion, Ubuntu and a shared sense of belonging.

National Heritage Day gives South Africans an opportunity to celebrate the country’s diverse cultural heritage and reflect on its contribution to nation-building.

The celebration will mark the culmination of Heritage Month, which has seen communities, heritage institutions and practitioners take part in programmes promoting cultural expression, intergenerational knowledge-sharing and the preservation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture previously announced George as the venue for the national celebration but has since secured Oudtshoorn as the site for the event.

The Presidency said the Heritage Day celebration will provide an opportunity to recognise and promote South Africa’s living heritage while strengthening social cohesion and a shared national identity.
