Ramaphosa deploys 510 SANDF members to KwaZulu-Natal amid violence
President Cyril Ramaphosa has deployed 510 South African National Defence Force members to KwaZulu-Natal to support police operations following violence linked to misinformation about a Constitutional Court judgment on the Refugees Act. The deployment is expected to cost more than R34 million.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has deployed 510 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to KwaZulu-Natal to assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) in maintaining law and order amid recent violence linked to misinformation about a Constitutional Court judgment on the Refugees Act.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ramaphosa informed National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces chairperson Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane of his decision to deploy the soldiers in support of Operation Prosper.
The SANDF members will remain on standby to assist police in responding to any eventualities arising from the situation in the province.
The Presidency said the deployment is intended to support law enforcement efforts following violent incidents associated with a campaign of misinformation about the Constitutional Court judgment.
The deployment was authorised in terms of Section 201(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.
It covers the period from October 9 to November 30, 2026.
The expected cost of the deployment is R34,082,720.
The Presidency said the soldiers would work in cooperation with SAPS as authorities seek to maintain law and order in KwaZulu-Natal.
