The NPA’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption has dismissed social media claims that it is targeting senior SAPS officials, saying arrests linked to the Medicare 24 case are based on evidence and lawful processes.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has condemned the false allegations circulated on social media platforms, insinuating that IDAC is deliberately targeting SAPS Senior officials.
This comes the arrest of 12 senior police officers and summons being served to the National Police Commissioner, in relation to an alleged irregular contract that was awarded by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to Medicare 24, a company owned by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is also an accused in the matter.
In a statement, the NPA said the matter was referred to IDAC in 2024, where investigations were conducted. It added that the case had initially been flagged by the SAPS Risk Audit Unit after suspected irregularities were identified, prompting the referral to IDAC for further probing.
The NPA emphasised that it is both irresponsible and misleading for certain groups and individuals to suggest that the arrests stem from submissions made at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry or the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee established to investigate allegations raised by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner on 6 June 2025.
IDAC Spokesperson Henry Mamothame in a statement said, respects the work of both the commission and the Ad Hoc Committee and will comply with any recommendations that may arise.
“Such false narratives seek to create divisions within the law enforcement fraternity, at a time where South Africans demand to see the wheels of justice in motion in a manner that is collaborative to fight the criminals and not each other. Society also demands to see all law enforcement agencies collaborating in the fight against corruption, something that the IDAC seeks to honour in all of its work and engagements,” Mamothame said.
Mamothame said the IDAC, like other law enforcement agencies, does not operate above the law, contrary to claims made in circulating false narratives. A judge has been appointed to provide oversight and ensure compliance and accountability in the division’s operations.
Society is urged to remain alert and not be misled by misinformation aimed at undermining efforts to combat corruption.
The IDAC calls on all South Africans to allow the law to take its course. Mamothame added that every action that has been taken followed all the due processes of the law. The arrests were based on the evidence at hand.
