The case against former SAPS officer Matipandile Sotheni, accused of murdering Witness D Marius van der Merwe, has been postponed to 24 April 2026 for a formal bail application.
The case against former South African Police Service (SAPS) officer Matipandile Sotheni, who is accused of murdering Witness D, Marius van der Merwe, has been postponed to 24 April 2026 for a formal bail application.
Sotheni made a brief appearance in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he placed a new legal representative on record. Attorney Nthabiseng Mohomane will now represent him in the matter.
The change in legal counsel follows the withdrawal of Attorney Eric Bryer. During a previous court appearance, Sotheni told the magistrate that he did not know Bryer and had not instructed him to act on his behalf.
The postponement will allow Sotheni’s new legal team time to prepare for the upcoming bail application. He remains in custody pending further proceedings.
