MK Party says it entered elections to win, not negotiate coalitions
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says its primary objective in the 2026 Local Government Elections was to secure outright majorities in the municipalities it contested, rather than position itself for coalition negotiations.
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says it contested the 2026 Local Government Elections with the intention of winning outright majorities, not seeking coalition partnerships with other political parties.
MK Party national spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu said the party had not entered the elections looking for coalition arrangements but wanted to govern the municipalities it contested.
“We didn't enter this election to have a coalition. We entered this election to win, to have an outright majority over the municipalities we had won. So we didn't go into this looking for partnership. We want to win,” Mahlangu said.
He said the party was pleased with its performance in several municipalities, particularly in Mpumalanga, where he claimed it had secured overwhelming support.
Mahlangu said the party appreciated the support received from voters in the province and pledged to return to communities to deliver on its election commitments.
Although the MK Party remains hopeful that it will secure enough support to govern without coalition partners, Mahlangu did not rule out the possibility of entering into agreements if necessary.
He said any potential coalition partner would have to share the party's ideological positions, including radical economic transformation, economic freedom and the return of land.
Mahlangu said the party would not compromise on these fundamental policy positions in any coalition negotiations.
“Nothing is off the chart yet,” he said, indicating that while the party's preference was to govern alone, discussions with ideologically aligned parties remained a possibility.
