MK Party removes Sibonelo Nomvalo as secretary-general
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has relieved Sibonelo Nomvalo of his duties as secretary-general, citing concerns over councillor selection, internal factionalism, accountability and communication within the party.
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has removed Sibonelo Nomvalo from his position as secretary-general, with changes to the party’s national leadership taking effect on 22 October 2026.
In a statement issued by the Office of the President, the party said the decision followed concerns about several organisational and administrative matters, including the councillor selection process, internal factionalism and issues relating to dual remuneration.
The party also cited delays in campaign materials, changes within the parliamentary caucus and parliamentary administration that were reportedly not communicated to the President, National Officials and the Presidency Collective.
Further concerns related to the establishment of high-level deployment committees without the knowledge of relevant party leadership structures.
According to the party, these issues raised questions about organisational coordination, internal communication, accountability and compliance with established procedures.
Following Nomvalo’s removal, Lindiwe Mtshali has been appointed acting secretary-general.
Mtshali will work in consultation with National Chairperson Mxolisi Phakathi to ensure continuity in the coordination, administration and organisational affairs of the party.
National spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu will also take on additional responsibilities associated with the office of the deputy secretary-general, sharing these functions with Mtshali while retaining his position as national spokesperson.
The party said the interim leadership arrangement is aimed at strengthening coordination and accountability while ensuring the effective implementation of decisions taken by authorised leadership structures.
Nomvalo has been asked to cooperate with the relevant structures to facilitate a smooth handover of duties.
The MK Party also called on its national, provincial, regional and branch structures to cooperate with the newly appointed officials and ensure that administrative processes and official communication comply with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
The party said it remained committed to unity, discipline, collective leadership and accountability, urging members to avoid unnecessary divisions and place the organisation’s interests above individual considerations.
The leadership changes come as the party seeks to strengthen its structures and ensure the continued effective functioning of its leadership and administration.
